Business
Aitken Spence PLC is a diversified conglomerate engaged in tourism, maritime and freight logistics, services, and strategic investments. Founded in 1868 and headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the company operates across South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the South Pacific, with an operational footprint in Sri Lanka, the Maldives, India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Fiji, and Mozambique. The company operates across four core business sectors: Tourism, Maritime & Freight Logistics, Services, and Strategic Investments. The Tourism sector provides comprehensive hospitality, travel, and destination management solutions, comprising the ownership and management of resort and city hotel portfolios under brands including Heritance Hotels & Resorts, Adaaran Resorts, and Turyaa; inbound and outbound tour operations; corporate travel management; and airline general sales agency services supported by global partnerships, including a joint venture with TUI Group. The Maritime & Freight Logistics sector delivers integrated supply chain and transport services, encompassing international multimodal freight forwarding across air, sea, and land; shipping liner agency representation and marine survey operations, including acting as the agent for Lloyd's of London in Sri Lanka; inland container depot and container freight station management; third-party logistics (3PL) warehousing and temperature-controlled distribution; port terminal management and stevedoring; and express courier services. The Services sector offers specialized business and consumer solutions, consisting of money transfer services as the principal agent for Western Union in Sri Lanka; insurance agency representation; business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) spanning finance, accounting, and enterprise technology services; commercial real estate management, including the Aitken Spence Towers; and the distribution, installation, and maintenance of elevators and escalators as the authorized distributor for Otis Elevator Company in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Strategic Investments sector comprises renewable energy generation from waste-to-energy, mini-hydro, wind, and utility-scale solar facilities; high-precision commercial printing, folding carton, and specialized packaging manufacturing for export and consumer goods industries; contract apparel manufacturing for international fashion brands; and the cultivation, processing, and export of tea, rubber, oil palm, and specialty commercial agriculture through subsidiaries including Elpitiya Plantations PLC. In recent developments, Aitken Spence has restructured its energy and strategic investment portfolio by divesting its legacy 100 MW thermal power generation assets upon the expiration of their long-term power purchase agreements, reallocating capital toward renewable energy and sustainable utility infrastructure. Underscoring its environmental transition, the company became the first diversified group in Sri Lanka to secure official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The group has also expanded its business process outsourcing operations by establishing operations within the Colombo Port City special economic zone. In its logistics and maritime division, the company continues to scale regional freight forwarding and supply chain network integration across strategic transit hubs in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, while advancing sustainability-driven resort modernizations and expanding eco-tourism offerings across its hospitality properties in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
