Union Chemicals Lanka PLC is a Sri Lanka-based chemical manufacturing and trading company engaged in the production and distribution of waterborne polymer dispersions, specialty industrial chemicals, surface coatings, and chemical raw materials. Founded in 1984 as Union Carbide Ceylon Ltd and incorporated as a public limited entity in 1988, the company is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with primary manufacturing, warehousing, and research facilities situated in Ekala, Ja-Ela. The company operates through two core business segments: Manufacturing and Trading/Indenting. The company's manufactured product portfolio specializes in water-based polymer dispersions and specialty formulations, comprising pure acrylic, styrene-acrylic, and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) emulsions used as binders for architectural paints, decorative coatings, and construction chemicals; water-based adhesives for packaging, paper converting, and woodworking; textile pigment binders and finishing auxiliaries; and the proprietary U-Coat range of water-based wood coatings, stains, timber sealers, and specialized floor and shoe finishes. Through its trading and indenting division, the company imports and supplies high-performance industrial chemical inputs, including alkyd resins, coating polymers, and opacifiers; paint additives, dispersing agents, defoamers, rheology modifiers, and thickeners; coalescing agents, paint driers, and wetting surfactants; industrial solvents, silicone fluids, and plasticizers; titanium dioxide and iron oxide inorganic pigments; polyolefins; and specialty chemical ingredients for the personal care, cosmetics, detergent, food processing, and pharmaceutical industries. Union Chemicals Lanka PLC maintains strategic distribution and agency representations with multinational manufacturers, including Dow Chemical Company, Eastman Chemical Company, Macropolymers Pvt. Ltd., Dominion Colour Corporation, and Sunflag Chemicals. In recent developments, Union Chemicals Lanka PLC has strategically broadened its green chemistry initiative by formulating low-VOC (volatile organic compound), formaldehyde-free, and APEO-free waterborne binder systems to address stringent international environmental standards in paint and textile applications. The company has also upgraded its production automation and technical evaluation laboratories at its Ekala manufacturing complex to enhance batch yield, energy efficiency, and formulation customization capabilities while mitigating raw material supply chain volatility. Additionally, the company has expanded its indenting and commercial distribution partnerships to capture rising demand in regional industrial manufacturing, construction chemical formulations, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors across Sri Lanka and adjacent South Asian markets.
