Business
COSUMAR SA is a Morocco-based agro-industrial group primarily engaged in the production, refining, packaging, and distribution of sugar and related agricultural co-products. Founded in 1929 and headquartered in Casablanca, Morocco, the company operates across the entire sugar value chain as an agricultural aggregator, industrial processor, and commercial supplier for both retail consumer and industrial sectors. COSUMAR manufactures and distributes a comprehensive portfolio of sugar products marketed under household brand names such as Enmer, Kasbah, La Gazelle, and El Bellar; refined sugar varieties including traditional molded sugar loaves, sugar cubes and pressed blocks, sugar ingots, and granulated white crystal sugar for direct consumption and large-scale food and beverage manufacturing; agricultural and industrial co-products comprising beet and cane molasses utilized in yeast production and alcohol distillation; dried sugar beet pulp pellets used for livestock feed; bagasse used for industrial biofuel; and agricultural aggregation services providing domestic farmers with technical assistance, crop financing, mechanized harvesting services, selected seed varieties, fertilizers, and precision irrigation support. The company operates major industrial sugar refining facilities and regional extraction plants across key agricultural basins in Morocco, including the Casablanca refinery, the Sidi Bennour complex, and regional production sites in Doukkala, Gharb, Loukkos, Tadla, and Moulouya, alongside international commercial packaging operations in West Africa through its subsidiary Compagnie Maroco-Guinéenne de Sucre (COMAGUIS) in Guinea. In recent developments, COSUMAR underwent a major strategic shareholder restructuring following the divestment of Wilmar International's 30.05% equity stake to a consortium of leading Moroccan institutional investors, including MAMDA, MCMA, CIMR, and RCAR, alongside French international sugar group Sucden, establishing a long-term strategic commercial alliance aimed at expanding international sugar marketing and export capabilities toward target volumes of one million tons annually. Concurrently, the group rationalized its asset portfolio by divesting its minority holdings in Saudi Arabia-based Durrah Advanced Development Company and the Wilmaco specialty fats joint venture. To reinforce national food security and industrial efficiency, COSUMAR commissioned its expanded refinery facility at Sidi Bennour, elevating total annual white sugar production capacity to 2.5 million metric tons, and launched a strategic diversification initiative investing over 500 million Moroccan dirhams to construct an industrial unit in Casablanca dedicated to capturing and processing industrial carbon emissions into high-purity liquid food-grade carbon dioxide for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications, while accelerating the rollout of precision agriculture, satellite tracking, and smart irrigation systems across Moroccan cultivation zones to mitigate regional drought impact.
