Business
Drax Group plc (Ticker: DRXGY) is a renewable energy company engaged in power generation from sustainable biomass, hydroelectric and pumped hydro storage assets; production of compressed wood pellets; and sales of renewable electricity to industrial and commercial customers. The company operates Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire, the UK's largest single source of renewable electricity which provides 5% of the UK's total energy annually or enough power for 5 million homes, alongside hydro assets across four sites in England and Scotland including Cruachan and Glenlee; it maintains a global bioenergy supply chain with 16 manufacturing facilities in the United States and Canada producing 4 million tonnes of sustainable biomass pellets annually from forest residuals for its own generation and customers in Europe, Asia and emerging markets such as sustainable aviation fuel. Drax Group serves business-to-business markets through its retail segment offering 100% renewable electricity and gas sourced from biomass, hydro and pumped storage which collectively deliver 10% of the UK's renewable power; it targets the energy, industrial and commercial sectors with flexible, dispatchable low-carbon solutions including grid support services and system stability amid rising demand from electrification. Founded in 2005 and headquartered at Drax Power Station in Selby, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, the company employs over 3,200 people across the UK, US, Canada and Japan with no listed subsidiaries or parent entities. Recent strategic developments include the October 2025 agreement to acquire a 260MW/520MWh portfolio of three short-duration battery energy storage system projects from Apatura for £157.2 million in staged payments through 2028, with operations starting in 2027 and an option on eight additional sites totalling 289MW to bolster its FlexGen portfolio; the launch of Elimini, an independently operated wholly owned subsidiary in 2024 focused on scaling bioenergy with carbon capture and storage for carbon dioxide removals at megaton scale including 11 deals with eight companies and over 20 potential BECCS sites in North America; ongoing £100 million investments in refurbishing Cruachan Power Station and Glenlee hydro assets to enhance long-duration storage; a new partnership with NGIS announced in October 2025 to map carbon stocks in North American biomass sourcing areas; and progress toward a UK government support mechanism for Drax Power Station to ensure long-term biomass generation viability.
