Business
United Commercial Bank PLC is a Bangladesh-based commercial banking institution that provides a comprehensive range of conventional, Islamic, offshore, and digital banking services to corporate, institutional, small and medium enterprise (SME), and retail clients. Established in 1983 and headquartered in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the bank operates an extensive nationwide branch network, sub-branches, agent banking outlets, and automated teller machines (ATMs). The bank operates through diversified business segments, offering specialized financial products and services categorized across core banking domains: Corporate and Institutional Banking offers working capital financing; term loans; syndicated financing; project financing; structured finance; cash management; and international trade services, including letters of credit, export financing, and bank guarantees. Retail and Consumer Banking provides savings accounts, current accounts, and fixed deposit schemes; residential mortgage loans; auto loans; unsecured personal loans; and credit, debit, and prepaid card products. Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Banking delivers tailored working capital credit lines; commercial vehicle and equipment loans; agricultural finance; and women entrepreneur financing programs. Islamic Banking provides Shariah-compliant deposit accounts, profit-sharing schemes, and Islamic financing facilities under its Taqwa brand. Digital and Transaction Banking offers internet and mobile banking services through its UCB One platform; open API banking infrastructure; merchant payment processing; and real-time fund transfers. Through its specialized subsidiaries, the institution also engages in non-banking financial activities: UCB Stock Brokerage Limited provides equity brokerage, margin lending, and custodial services; UCB Investment Limited offers investment banking, underwriting, corporate advisory, and issue management services; UCB Asset Management Limited provides mutual fund administration and portfolio wealth management; and UCB Fintech Company Limited delivers mobile financial services (MFS), digital wallets, and utility payment solutions under the brand name upay. In recent operational developments, the bank transitioned its official corporate identity from United Commercial Bank Limited to United Commercial Bank PLC. Following regulatory directives from Bangladesh Bank in August 2024, the institution underwent a comprehensive board reconstitution and leadership restructuring led by newly appointed Chairman Sharif Zahir to implement rigorous corporate governance reforms, accelerate non-performing loan recoveries, and strengthen balance sheet quality. Operationally, the bank has accelerated its digital transformation strategy by expanding the UCB One digital banking ecosystem and open API capabilities, driving the majority of customer transactions to digital channels while achieving profitability across its agent banking network. Additionally, the bank continues to expand its strategic alliances, entering into commercial financing partnerships such as electric vehicle financing agreements with automotive distributors and expanding digital payment integration across its upay mobile platform.
