Business
Electricité de France S.A. (EDF) is a French state-owned multinational electric utility that generates, transmits, distributes, trades and sells electricity; designs, constructs and dismantles power plants; and provides energy services including engineering, optimization and efficiency solutions. Its core offerings encompass nuclear power from 56 reactors primarily in France, hydropower, wind power through EDF Renewables, solar energy, biomass, geothermal, fossil-fired generation and smart energy solutions for cities, businesses and households via subsidiaries such as Dalkia; it also operates distribution networks through Enedis and transmission via RTE. Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Paris, France, EDF maintains operations across Europe (including the UK, Italy, Belgium and Poland), North and South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, serving over 37 million customers worldwide with approximately 120 gigawatts of installed capacity. In recent developments, EDF reorganized its nuclear business in April 2024 to support France's nuclear revival, including government-planned investments for six new EPR2 reactors starting from 2035; it completed the acquisition of GE Steam Power's nuclear activities in May 2024, rebranded as Arabelle Solutions, enhancing capabilities in steam turbines and plant maintenance. The company secured a 4.5 billion pound financing commitment from Apollo in June 2025 primarily for UK projects like Hinkley Point C, and merged EDF Renewables with its international division into EDF power solutions in June 2025 to streamline global low-carbon and renewable initiatives. Further, EDF expanded offshore wind partnerships in 2023-2025, including with ESB and Reventus Power for a 1.5 GW Celtic Sea project, Simply Blue Group in Ireland and Enbridge in North America; it also raised a 5.8 billion euro loan in May 2024 for extending the life of its 900 MWe reactors and adjusted its Nuward small modular reactor design toward a 400 MWe model for market entry in the 2030s. In July 2025, EDF shifted strategy by withdrawing from new nuclear bids abroad outside nearby EU countries to prioritize domestic programs.
