- SPDR S&P Emerging Markets Small Cap ETF (EWX) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the total return performance of the S&P Emerging Markets Under USD2 Billion Index, a float-adjusted, market capitalization-weighted index that tracks the small-capitalization segment of emerging market equities included in the S&P Global BMI Index. Launched on May 12, 2008, and issued and managed by State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), a division of State Street Global Advisors, Inc., headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, EWX offers investors diversified exposure to over 3,300 small-cap stocks from emerging markets across diversified sectors including finance, electronic technology, producer manufacturing, process industries and health technology; it emphasizes companies with market capitalizations under USD2 billion, excluding South Korea which S&P classifies as developed, and provides holdings concentrated in Asia Pacific (approximately 78%), with significant allocations to Taiwan, India, China, Malaysia and South Africa. The fund employs a representative sampling strategy to replicate the index, maintains a gross expense ratio of 0.65%, distributes dividends semi-annually and serves institutional and retail investors targeting long-term growth in underrepresented emerging small-cap equities, with assets under management of approximately USD732 million as of late 2025.
EWX operates globally with primary exposure to emerging market countries including Taiwan, India, China, Brazil, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, representing small-cap companies in growth and value styles across broad-based sectors, while holding negligible cash and utilizing no derivatives. Recent institutional interest has intensified, highlighted by Flow Traders U.S. LLC establishing a new stake valued at USD1.14 million in shares during the second quarter of 2025, alongside increases by Cetera Investment Advisers (up 21.7% to 34,052 shares), Baird Financial Group and Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, signaling sustained demand amid EWX's 10-15% annualized returns over recent one- and three-year periods. The fund's dividend payout reached USD1.89 annually as of mid-2025, with ex-dividend payments on June 23, 2025 (USD0.64) and December 23, 2024 (USD1.25), reflecting operational stability and attractive yield of nearly 3% despite market volatility.
