- First Trust Emerging Markets AlphaDEX Fund (FEM) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks investment results corresponding generally to the price and yield, before the fund's fees and expenses, of the Nasdaq AlphaDEX Emerging Markets Index. The fund normally invests at least 90% of its net assets, including investment borrowings, in the common stocks, depositary receipts, real estate investment trusts and tracking stocks that comprise the index; the index employs a quantitative methodology to select stocks from emerging markets based on growth and value factors, then weights them equally within tiers based on market capitalization. Launched on April 18, 2011, and domiciled in the United States with First Trust Advisors L.P. as investment adviser and First Trust Portfolios L.P. as distributor, FEM trades on the Nasdaq and targets investors seeking exposure to diversified emerging market equities across large, mid and small capitalization companies in regions including China, Taiwan, Brazil, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Hungary, Turkey, Mexico and South Africa. The fund's portfolio, comprising approximately 166 to 172 holdings, features top positions in companies such as Pop Mart International Group Limited, Xiaomi Corporation, Geely Automobile Holdings Limited, Embraer S.A., Orlen S.A., China Hongqiao Group Limited, Evergreen Marine Corporation and MOL Hungarian Oil & Gas Plc; it distributes dividends quarterly, with recent payouts including $0.1449 in December 2024, $0.3247 in September 2024 and $0.2411 in June 2024, reflecting a trailing twelve-month yield of about 3.50%. In October 2015, the fund underwent a significant strategic shift by changing its underlying index from the Defined Emerging Markets Index to the Nasdaq AlphaDEX Emerging Markets Index, enhancing its stock selection process through First Trust's patented AlphaDEX methodology licensed to Nasdaq.
