- FormulaFolios Smart Growth ETF (FFSG), a series of Northern Lights Fund Trust IV, is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks capital growth by investing primarily in domestic and foreign growth-oriented equity securities of any market capitalization through unaffiliated exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as well as U.S. Treasuries or other cash equivalents. The fund is generally 100% invested in growth-oriented equity ETFs, including major holdings such as iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV; approximately 31%), SPDR Bloomberg 1-3 Month T-Bill ETF (BIL; approximately 24%), iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH; approximately 12%), iShares Core S&P Small-Cap ETF (IJR; approximately 12%), Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM; approximately 10%), and SPDR S&P Dividend ETF (SDY; approximately 10%), when the adviser's proprietary models indicate a bullish equity market trend; conversely, it shifts to approximately 50% in growth-oriented equity ETFs and 50% in U.S. Treasuries or short-term bonds during bearish trends to hedge risk. Previously advised by FormulaFolio Investments LLC (founded in 2011 and headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan), the ETF reflects a strategy emphasizing algorithmic trend-following to mitigate emotional decision-making in portfolio management.
In a significant strategic development, FormulaFolio Investments merged with Brookstone Capital Management in July 2020, creating a combined registered investment adviser (RIA) with over $6.5 billion in assets under management and retaining the FormulaFolios brand for its asset management division while integrating advanced technologies and advisor support platforms. Brookstone Asset Management LLC (formerly FormulaFolio Investments LLC) subsequently announced in August 2023 the closure and liquidation of FFSG, along with FormulaFolios Hedged Growth ETF (FFHG), FormulaFolios Tactical Growth ETF (FFTG), and FormulaFolios Tactical Income ETF (FFTI), with operations ceasing and assets distributed to shareholders on or about October 16, 2023; however, as of late 2025, public trading and holdings data for FFSG continue to appear active on major exchanges and financial platforms. The ETF targets investors seeking long-term growth with tactical risk management, primarily through a diversified portfolio of underlying ETFs focused on U.S. large-, mid-, and small-cap equities, dividend strategies, and short-term fixed income for defense.
FFSG operates within the diversified portfolio and aggressive growth ETF segments, distributed nationwide in the United States via platforms like NYSE Arca, with an expense ratio of approximately 0.70% and no K-1 distributions. The fund was incepted on October 31, 2017, under the oversight of Northern Lights Fund Trust IV, a Delaware statutory trust, and serves financial advisors and individual investors focused on emotion-free, model-driven equity exposure.
