Business
iShares Frontier and Select EM ETF (FM) is an exchange-traded fund launched by BlackRock, Inc. and managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors. The fund provides exposure to frontier market equities and, to a lesser extent, select emerging market equities; it invests in growth and value stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors and market capitalizations in public equity markets of global frontier and emerging regions. It benchmarks its performance against the MSCI Frontier and Emerging Markets Select Index and previously tracked the MSCI Frontier Markets 100 Index prior to a name change and index shift in March 2021. Geographically, the fund focused on countries including Vietnam, Nigeria, Romania, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Bahrain, and the Philippines, with significant historical allocations to Vietnamese stocks that at times exceeded 28% of net assets. Formed on September 12, 2012, and domiciled in the United States with assets under management peaking above $400 million, it targeted investors seeking diversification into higher-growth, lower-liquidity markets beyond traditional emerging economies. In June 2024, BlackRock announced the fund's closure and liquidation due to persistent liquidity challenges in the remaining universe of frontier markets following several countries' upgrades to emerging market status, alongside currency repatriation restrictions and economic pressures in key holdings like Nigeria and Kenya. Trading ceased after market close on January 6, 2025, with the fund suspended on January 7, 2025; liquidation proceeds of $27.234261 per share were distributed to shareholders on January 9, 2025, marking the fund's full wind-down after an extended liquidation period during which it held primarily cash equivalents. As of early 2025, the fund is no longer operational.
