Business
Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. Global Blood Therapeutics, Inc. (GBT), founded in 2011 and headquartered in South San Francisco, California, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of therapies for sickle cell disease (SCD) and other blood disorders; its primary product is Oxbryta (voxelotor), an oral, once-daily therapy approved by the FDA for treating SCD in patients aged four years and older by increasing hemoglobin's affinity for oxygen to inhibit sickle hemoglobin polymerization, hemolysis, and hemolytic anemia; the company previously advanced a pipeline including inclacumab, a P-selectin inhibitor for reducing vaso-occlusive crises in SCD, and GBT601 (osivelotor), an oral HbS polymerization inhibitor. GBT operates primarily in the United States with approvals and marketing authorizations extending to Europe, Great Britain, and Gulf Cooperation Council countries including Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, targeting underserved patient communities affected by SCD, a lifelong inherited blood disorder prevalent in populations of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent. In October 2022, Pfizer Inc. completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of GBT, making it a wholly owned subsidiary and integrating its portfolio and pipeline into Pfizer's rare hematology efforts; subsequently, Pfizer withdrew Oxbryta from global markets in 2024 after post-approval data indicated its benefits no longer outweighed risks, and in August 2025, Pfizer's phase 3 THRIVE study of inclacumab missed its primary endpoint of reducing vaso-occlusive crises, though the company continues development of osivelotor in phase 3 and reaffirms commitment to SCD innovation.
