In October 2022, Pfizer Inc. completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of GBT, making it a wholly owned subsidiary and integrating its portfolio and pipeline into Pfizer's rare hematology efforts; subsequently, Pfizer withdrew Oxbryta from global markets in 2024 after post-approval data indicated its benefits no longer outweighed risks, and in August 2025, Pfizer's phase 3 THRIVE study of inclacumab missed its primary endpoint of reducing vaso-occlusive crises, though the company continues development of osivelotor in phase 3 and reaffirms commitment to SCD innovation.
