- Guggenheim Enhanced Equity Income Fund (NYSE: GPM) is a diversified, closed-end management investment company that seeks a high level of current income and current gains with a secondary objective of long-term capital appreciation. The Fund pursues its objectives by investing primarily in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking equity market indices such as the S&P 500 Equal Weight Strategy ETF (68.23% holding), Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1, iShares Russell 2000 ETF, and SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust; employing a covered call option writing strategy utilizing a rules-based methodology; and utilizing derivative instruments including futures contracts, options on futures, forward contracts, and swap agreements to enhance returns, hedge risks, or gain equity exposure. It may also invest directly in individual equity securities across diversified sectors including information technology, health care, industrials, consumer discretionary, and financials, while employing financial leverage representing 31.16% of total assets to amplify returns.
Founded on August 25, 2005, and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, with investment advisory services provided by Guggenheim Funds Investment Advisors, LLC and sub-advisory by Guggenheim Partners Investment Management, LLC in Santa Monica, California, the Fund is domiciled in the United States and primarily targets U.S. equity markets for retail and institutional investors seeking income-oriented closed-end fund exposure.
In a major strategic reorganization, Guggenheim Enhanced Equity Income Fund merged with and into Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities Fund (NYSE: GOF) prior to market open on October 25, 2021, following shareholder approval in September 2021 and board approval in April 2021; this merger, which also involved Guggenheim Credit Allocation Fund (GGM), aimed to provide GPM shareholders with enhanced investment opportunities, economies of scale, and improved secondary market liquidity through GOF's structure, with GPM common shareholders receiving newly issued GOF shares equivalent to their pro rata net asset value. The Fund ceased independent trading post-merger, with its ticker GPM marked as defunct since October 22, 2021.
