Business
Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF (HMLSF), now operated under the Global X brand, is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to replicate, to the extent possible, the performance of the North American Marijuana Index, which tracks the equity performance of publicly listed companies involved in the cannabis industry across North America. The ETF provides investors with exposure to a diversified portfolio of equity securities from constituent issuers engaged in medical and recreational marijuana cultivation, processing, licensed production, biotechnology research, distribution, and ancillary services; holdings include both large-cap and mid-cap growth and value stocks listed on exchanges in Canada and the United States, subject to periodic rebalancing for regulatory compliance, liquidity, and market capitalization changes. Geographically, operations focus on Canadian and U.S. markets, reflecting evolving legalization frameworks in both jurisdictions. Launched in April 2017 and domiciled in Canada with headquarters in Toronto, the ETF was originally managed by Horizons ETFs Management (Canada) Inc., which underwent a complete rebranding to Global X Investments Canada Inc. effective April 2025 as part of alignment with its global parent Mirae Asset Global Investments. In 2022, the ETF implemented a 1-for-2 reverse stock split effective November 6, along with options contract adjustments including a new symbol (HMMJ1), multiplier changes, and updated position limits to enhance trading efficiency. Recent quarterly rebalances continue to adjust holdings to reflect the dynamic cannabis sector, with the latest annual distribution yield reported at 1.22% as of December 16, 2025; no major acquisitions, new product launches, or strategic partnerships specific to this ETF have been announced in the past 1-2 years.
