Business
Nuveen Preferred Securities & Income Opportunities Fund (NYSE: JPI) is a closed-end balanced fund that provides a high level of current income and secondarily total return by investing at least 80% of its managed assets in preferred securities and other income-producing securities, including hybrid securities such as contingent capital securities; up to 20% opportunistically in other income-oriented securities, primarily corporate and taxable municipal debt as well as common equity; with at least 50% allocated to investment-grade securities at the time of purchase or unrated equivalents judged comparable by the portfolio team; and employing leverage to enhance returns. The fund targets issuers in financial services sectors including banks, insurance companies, REITs, and utilities, with investments spanning U.S. and non-U.S. markets. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, at 333 West Wacker Drive, JPI operates globally but focuses primarily on North American and international fixed income and equity opportunities in the asset management industry. In a major strategic reorganization completed on September 22, 2025, JPI merged into Nuveen Preferred & Income Opportunities Fund (NYSE: JPC), with JPI shareholders receiving JPC shares based on net asset value as of September 19, 2025, creating a larger combined fund with enhanced liquidity, operational efficiency, and reduced expense ratios through economies of scale. Prior to the merger, in August 2024, JPI eliminated its term structure following a successful tender offer for up to 100% of common shares at NAV (expiring August 14, 2024, contingent on post-tender assets of at least $70 million), renamed itself from Nuveen Preferred and Income Term Fund to its current name effective August 19, 2024, and increased its monthly distribution rate by 69.4% to $0.1660 per share. Nuveen, the fund's sponsor and manager with over 35 years of closed-end fund experience and $52 billion in CEF assets across 45 funds as of June 30, 2025, also committed to waiving 50% of JPI's net management fees through August 18, 2025, to support performance post-restructuring. The co-managers are Nuveen Fund Advisors, LLC and Nuveen Asset Management, LLC.
