Nuveen Preferred Securities Income Fund (NYSE: JPS) is a closed-end fixed income mutual fund that seeks a high level of current income consistent with preservation of capital, investing at least 80% of its managed assets in preferred securities and other income-producing securities such as investment grade preferred debt securities, convertible debt securities, and convertible preferred securities rated BBB/Baa or better by S&P, Moody's, or Fitch; hybrid securities including contingent capital securities; and up to 20% opportunistically in corporate debt, taxable municipal debt, and common equity from U.S. and non-U.S. issuers across the credit quality spectrum. The fund employs leverage and targets income-focused investors, with distributions comprising net investment income, capital gains, and return of capital. Launched on June 24, 2002 by Nuveen Investments, Inc. (now part of TIAA), and formerly known as Nuveen Quality Preferred Income Fund 2, the fund is co-managed by Nuveen Fund Advisors, LLC and Spectrum Asset Management, Inc., with headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. It operates primarily in the U.S. fixed income markets, serving institutional and retail investors seeking regular income distributions. In a major strategic reorganization completed in 2023, JPS merged with Nuveen Preferred & Income Opportunities Fund (JPC) and Nuveen Preferred and Income Fund (JPT), consolidating into JPC to form one of the largest listed preferred securities closed-end funds with approximately $4 billion in assets, lower net operating expenses, enhanced liquidity, increased trading volume, and improved operational efficiency through elimination of redundancies. This tax-free merger, first proposed in October 2023 and approved by shareholders, followed similar consolidations and aimed to boost net returns for shareholders amid market volatility. Nuveen, the leading sponsor of closed-end funds with over $52 billion in CEF assets under management across 45 funds as of mid-2025 and more than 35 years of CEF experience, continues to oversee the combined entity's diversified preferred securities strategy.
