Business
Keikyu Corporation operates as a diversified enterprise primarily engaged in transportation, real estate, leisure services, retail distribution, and related businesses in Japan. Founded in 1898 and headquartered in Yokohama, the company’s transportation segment includes the operation of railway lines, taxis, and charter bus services, with a rail network covering over 80 kilometers and serving key urban areas including Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture. Keikyu also manages real estate activities encompassing the sale, lease, and development of land, residential, commercial, office buildings, parking facilities, and brokerage and consulting services. Its leisure services division operates hotels, inns, golf courses, aquariums, yacht harbors, and restaurants, while the distribution segment involves retail operations in department stores, shopping centers, convenience and drug stores. The company additionally undertakes construction, civil engineering, electrical and telecommunications work, transportation equipment maintenance, and building management. Recent major changes include the launch of the 20th Integrated Management Plan in 2024, aimed at transforming the company’s business structure towards sustainable growth by expanding beyond its railway-centric operations into enhanced real estate and digital transformation initiatives. In March 2024, Keikyu commenced a significant commercial development project at Shinagawa Station West Exit, enhancing lineside area value. The company formalized a strategic agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation for joint development and operation of a new building in front of Shinagawa Station, marking a key partnership for its long-term urban development strategy. In 2025, Keikyu expanded its inbound tourism outreach by launching official social media accounts in Chinese to attract visitors from Greater China, reflecting a strategic shift towards tourism-oriented services along its transportation corridors. Keikyu also completed a substantial equity buyback in 2025, signaling financial restructuring efforts to strengthen its balance sheet. Keikyu’s integrated business model emphasizes passenger transportation safety and customer satisfaction, investing in modern fleet upgrades and digital technologies to improve service quality. Its operations span urban and regional passenger transit alongside community and commercial real estate development, targeting domestic commuters, real estate investors, leisure customers, and retail consumers across Japan. The company maintains subsidiaries including Keikyu Construction and Keikyu Electric Engineering, supporting its infrastructure and engineering projects. Keikyu continues to expand its portfolio with a focus on profitability, digital transformation, and enhancing the value of its extensive railway-adjacent properties, positioning itself as a comprehensive urban lifestyle and transportation services provider in the Greater Tokyo area and beyond.
