Business
Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) operates as South Koreas largest private broadcaster, providing nationwide terrestrial television and radio services alongside cable channels and digital content distribution. Founded in 1990 and headquartered at 82 Sangamsan-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, the company delivers a comprehensive portfolio of programming including flagship SBS TV on channel 6 featuring dramas such as Running Man, Inkigayo music show, news programs like SBS Eight OClock News and Morning Wide, variety shows, reality series, documentaries, and sports coverage; three radio networks encompassing SBS Love FM on 103.5 MHz, SBS Power FM on 107.7 MHz, and SBS V-Radio via DMB; nine cable channels comprising SBS Plus, SBS Golf, SBS Golf 2, SBS funE, SBS Life, SBS Sports, SBS Biz, SBS M, and SBS F!L UHD; and digital offerings such as video-on-demand through SBS platforms, content sales, and international distribution. SBS maintains a nationwide network of 10 regional affiliates including KNN in Busan, TJB in Daejeon, and JIBS in Jeju, targeting diverse audiences across entertainment, news, music, and cultural segments primarily in South Korea with global reach via subsidiaries and partnerships. The company functions under SBS Media Holdings as its parent, with key subsidiaries and affiliates like SBS Contents Hub for online media distribution, SBS International for U.S. operations via SBS America, SBS Artech for creative services, SBS Newstech for IT support, Studio S for drama production, Prism Studios for entertainment content, and cable operators SBS Medianet and Medianet Plus. Geographically focused on South Korea with operations spanning Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and other provinces through regional stations, SBS generates revenue from terrestrial and radio advertising, program sales, cable services, and digital streaming. In recent developments, SBS agreed in August 2024 to acquire the remaining 21.08% stake in SBS Contents Hub for KRW 23.3 billion to consolidate content distribution control; its affiliate SBS Contents Hub agreed to acquire SBS International from TY Holdings for KRW 23.1 billion; and SBS acquired an additional 48% stake in SBS Newstech for KRW 1.7 billion in February to strengthen IT capabilities. Additionally, in June 2025, SBS invested $20 million for a 3.8% stake in Indonesian media firm MD Entertainment via new share issuance, establishing a Southeast Asian content foothold as part of its international expansion strategy; the company also pursues mergers like absorbing SBS Contents Hub through a comprehensive share exchange to streamline operations and delist the affiliate. These moves reflect SBSs focus on vertical integration, digital enhancement, and global content partnerships amid evolving media landscapes.
