Founded in 1887 and headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, the company transports a diverse range of commodities including agriculture and minerals such as soybean meal, grain, oils, distillers dried grains, corn syrup, sugar, ores, clay and glass; energy products like coal, frac sand, petroleum coke and crude oil; automotive components and finished vehicles for manufacturers, assembly plants and distribution centers; chemicals and petroleum; industrial and consumer products; and intermodal containers supporting north-south trade flows between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Kansas City Southern de México operates approximately 3,000 route miles in northeastern and central Mexico, handling 46% of Mexico's rail traffic and 60% of U.S.-bound freight, while the legacy U.S. network covers about 3,984 route miles from Kansas City to Gulf Coast ports in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, with trackage rights enhancing connectivity; the company employs over 7,000 railroaders and maintains a fleet of roughly 957 locomotives and 17,110 freight cars.
