Business
Lonza Group AG, a Swiss multinational contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), specializes in the production of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and nutrition ingredients and services for the life sciences industry. Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, the company operates over 30 development and manufacturing sites across Europe, North America, South Asia, and other regions including the United States, United Kingdom, India, China, and Singapore. Lonza provides custom manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals such as monoclonal antibodies, biologics, cell and gene therapies, and biosimilars; small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) including highly potent APIs; bioconjugates and antibody-drug conjugates; drug product services encompassing formulation, fill-finish, vial filling, and lyophilization; detection systems and bioscience tools; as well as capsules, dosage form solutions, and health ingredients for nutraceutical customers. The company serves pharmaceutical, biotech, and nutraceutical firms globally, focusing on end-to-end solutions from drug substance development to commercial-scale manufacturing, with particular strengths in mammalian cell culture, microbial fermentation, and advanced modalities like mRNA and viral vectors. Lonza maintains leadership in CDMO segments including integrated biologics, advanced synthesis, and specialized modalities, reporting strong demand and nearly 20% sales growth in its CDMO business for 2025 alongside a core EBITDA margin approaching 30%. In recent developments, Lonza completed the acquisition of the Genentech biologics manufacturing site in Vacaville, California, from Roche in October 2024 to bolster large-scale mammalian capacity; acquired Synaffix in 2023 to enhance antibody-drug conjugate capabilities; operationalized a new cGMP drug product line in Visp, Switzerland, in 2023 supporting clinical and commercial vial filling; and announced plans in 2024-2025 to divest its Capsules and Health Ingredients division for approximately 2.5 billion euros as part of portfolio optimization and strategic focus on core CDMO operations. Further expansions include a highly potent API facility and large-scale milling in Wyss, Switzerland, ramping up in 2025; bioconjugation site construction in Visp targeting 2027-2028 operations; and ongoing investments like a CHF 500 million drug product facility in Stein, Switzerland, alongside Ibex solutions for complete product lifecycle management at single sites.
