State Street Nuveen Municipal Bond ESG ETF (MBNE) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide current income exempt from regular federal income taxes through investments in municipal bonds exhibiting favorable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) characteristics; capital appreciation serves as a secondary objective. Under normal market conditions, the fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in municipal bonds rated Baa3/BBB-/BBB- or higher by Moody's, S&P, or Fitch Ratings, including state and local general obligation bonds, revenue bonds, pre-refunded bonds, insured bonds, and municipal lease obligations, with primary focus on intermediate-term securities. SSGA Funds Management, Inc., a subsidiary of State Street Global Advisors based in Boston, Massachusetts, serves as the investment adviser, while Nuveen Asset Management, LLC acts as the investment sub-adviser.
Launched on April 4, 2022, and listed on the Cboe BZX Exchange, Inc., MBNE targets investors seeking tax-efficient income from U.S. municipal bonds aligned with ESG criteria, such as issuers leading in sector-specific ESG outcomes or funding positive environmental and social projects.
In November 2025, State Street Investment Management announced plans to close and liquidate MBNE, with creations and redemptions ceasing on May 12, 2026, and trading suspended on May 13, 2026, as part of an ongoing review of its ETF lineup; this represents a significant operational change for the fund, which maintains approximately $13 million in assets under management.
