iShares MSCI USA Mid-Cap Multifactor ETF (MIDF) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. mid-capitalization stocks exhibiting favorable exposure to multiple investment style factors, including value, quality, momentum, and low volatility, selected and weighted from the MSCI USA Mid Cap Index. The fund offers investors diversified exposure to mid-cap equities across sectors such as industrials, financials, consumer discretionary, information technology, and healthcare; it primarily invests in equity securities of U.S. companies with market capitalizations typically between $2.7 billion and $15 billion, emphasizing factor-based screening to enhance risk-adjusted returns. Sponsored and managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors, a subsidiary of BlackRock, Inc., the ETF was launched in 2016 and headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, with operations focused on the U.S. market through trading on NYSE Arca. Geographically, its holdings are predominantly U.S.-based (approximately 86-99%), with minor allocations to other North American and international exposures via multinational mid-caps.
In August 2020, the fund underwent a name change from iShares Edge MSCI Multifactor USA Mid-Cap ETF to its current designation, reflecting a rebranding within the iShares product lineup. The ETF ceased active trading on August 22, 2022, following BlackRock's announcement of its closure due to low assets under management and strategic portfolio review; proceeds were liquidated and distributed to remaining shareholders shortly thereafter, rendering the fund inactive. No subsequent relaunches, partnerships, funding rounds, acquisitions, or product expansions have occurred, as the fund is no longer operational; its target customers included institutional and retail investors seeking multifactor mid-cap strategies prior to closure. BlackRock continues to offer alternative mid-cap factor and blend ETFs, such as the iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH), within its broader lineup of over 400 iShares ETFs.
