Business
Mallinckrodt plc Mallinckrodt plc is a global specialty pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, markets and distributes branded and generic pharmaceuticals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and imaging agents. Founded in 1867 and headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, with operational headquarters in the United States including locations in Hazelwood, Missouri, Bedminster, New Jersey, and Staines-upon-Thames, United Kingdom, the company operates primarily in North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and other international markets. Its Specialty Brands segment focuses on therapies for autoimmune and rare diseases across neurology, rheumatology, nephrology, pulmonology, ophthalmology, immunology, urology, hepatology, orthopedics, and critical care; immunotherapy and neonatal respiratory critical care; analgesics; gastrointestinal products; and hemostasis products including extracorporeal photopheresis via Therakos; while the Specialty Generics segment provides specialty generic drugs such as hydrocodone- and oxycodone-containing tablets, other controlled substances for pain management, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medications, addiction treatments, buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone), codeine, dextroamphetamine, fentanyl citrate, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), methadone (Methadose), methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), naloxone (Narcan), naltrexone (Revia, Vivitrol), pethidine (Demerol), sufentanil citrate, and various compounded medications with acetaminophen or ibuprofen; medical imaging products encompass contrast media like Optiray (ioversol) for CT scans and Optimark (gadoversetamide) for MRI, alongside radiopharmaceuticals. Key branded products include Acthar Gel (repository corticotropin injection) for infantile spasms, multiple sclerosis exacerbations, and orphan indications; Terlivaz (terlipressin); Ofirmev (IV acetaminophen); Xartemis XR (oxycodone-acetaminophen extended-release); and Exalgo (hydromorphone extended-release). In a transformative strategic shift, Mallinckrodt completed a merger with Endo, Inc. on August 1, 2025, creating a scaled diversified therapeutics leader valued at $6.7 billion, with Mallinckrodt shareholders owning 50.1% pro forma; the combined entity subsequently spun off its generic pharmaceuticals and Endo's sterile injectables into Par Health as a standalone U.S.-advantaged manufacturer, while rebranding the remaining specialty branded business as Keenova Therapeutics in November 2025 to target rare, stigmatized, and unaddressed conditions. Prior to the merger, the company emerged from its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring on November 14, 2023, reducing funded debt by $1.9 billion, enhancing liquidity, and appointing new board members including David Stetson and Jon Zinman; it also secured FDA approvals for generics like lisdexamfetamine dimesylate capsules (Vyvanse generic), launched delivery innovations for Acthar Gel, and advanced Terlivaz adoption. These changes position the former Mallinckrodt businesses with improved financial flexibility, vertical integration in U.S. manufacturing, and focused portfolios serving hospitals, wholesalers, retail chains, physicians, imaging centers, and patients with severe conditions.
