Business
S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Public Corporation Energia Open Joint Stock Company (RKKE.ME) serves as Russia's primary aerospace manufacturer and spacecraft design bureau, specializing in human spaceflight systems, space station modules, and satellite platforms. Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Korolyov, Moscow Oblast, the company develops and operates the Russian Orbital Segment of the International Space Station, including Zvezda, Pirs, Poisk, Rassvet, Nauka, and Prichal modules; manufactures and launches Soyuz MS crewed spacecraft for human missions and Progress MS uncrewed cargo vehicles; produces upper stage Block DM for satellite deployments; builds automatic spacecraft for satellite communications, Earth remote sensing, navigation, and orbital servicing under the Universal Spacecraft Configuration; and provides commercial astronaut launches, space tourism services, and ancillary operations such as communications, health resorts, catering, security, and heat energy production in steam and hot water forms. It operates primarily from facilities in Korolyov, with launch support at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia, serving markets in Russia, the United States, Egypt, Japan, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates. Ongoing projects encompass Orel reusable crewed spacecraft development for lunar and deep-space missions, Parom space tug as a Progress replacement, and contributions to a prospective Russian national orbital station. In recent developments, the company confronts a critical financial crisis marked by multi-billion ruble debts, workforce morale declines, and bankruptcy risks as acknowledged by CEO Igor Maltsev in August 2025, amid denials of imminent sale rumors and dependency on ISS contracts through 2030; it advances crewed lunar programs targeting landings by 2025 and a helium-3 extraction base by 2030, while facing challenges from sanctions, aging infrastructure, and reduced international revenues.
