Business
Mechel PAO is a leading Russian vertically integrated mining and steel group operating primarily in Russia, as well as in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Asia, and Europe. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Moscow, Mechel operates through three core segments: Steel, Mining, and Power. The Steel segment manufactures and sells semi-finished steel products; long steel products across a wide range of grades; carbon and stainless flat steel products; and high value-added metal products including wire products, hardware, forgings, stampings, structural shapes, beams, and rails. The Mining segment produces metallurgical coal (including coking coal, PCI coal, and anthracite), steam coal, iron ore concentrate, coke, and chemical products. The Power segment generates and sells electricity, thermal energy in the form of hot water and steam, blast furnace blast, fresh and chemically purified water, and compressed air; it also offers agency services for thermal energy transmission and provides logistics services. Recent major changes include Mechel's continued focus on operational efficiency and strategic debt restructuring in light of economic challenges and sanctions affecting the company since 2024. The company reported full-year 2024 revenue of approximately RUB 387 billion with a net loss reflecting broader market pressures and increased production costs. Mechel has maintained its integrated industrial operations while adapting to geopolitical and economic conditions. No major acquisitions or divestitures were reported in the last year, but the company has actively optimized its product mix and expanded certain high value-added steel product offerings to strengthen its market position. Mechel’s geographic footprint includes industrial and mining operations across 12 regions of Russia plus assets in the US, Kazakhstan, Romania, Lithuania, and Bulgaria. It serves customers in Russia (the largest market), the CIS, Asia, and Europe. The group employs over 56,000 employees and remains one of Russia’s top producers of coal, iron ore, steel, rolled products, ferroalloys, and energy. Mechel changed its legal name from Mechel OAO to Mechel PAO in March 2016 and continues focusing on metallurgical coal and steel product innovations alongside its integrated power generation capabilities. The company’s operations target industrial, construction, and manufacturing sectors requiring metallurgical materials and energy supplies.
