Business
Batu Kawan Berhad is a Malaysia-based investment holding company operating primarily in plantation agriculture, chemical and oleochemical manufacturing, property development, and logistics services. Founded in 1965 and headquartered in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, the company conducts its diversified operations directly and through major subsidiaries and associated entities, most notably its core plantation and manufacturing subsidiary Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad, as well as Malay-Sino Chemical Industries Sendirian Berhad and Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad. The company organizes its business into four principal segments: Plantation, Manufacturing, Property Development, and Investment Holding and Others. In its Plantation segment, Batu Kawan Berhad engages in the cultivation, harvesting, milling, and refining of oil palm and rubber, producing crude palm oil; palm kernels; palm kernel oil; fresh fruit bunches; and processed natural rubber. Its Manufacturing segment manufactures an extensive portfolio of industrial chemicals, specialty oleochemicals, and consumer goods, including chlor-alkali chemicals such as caustic soda liquid and flakes, liquid chlorine, hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and ferric chloride; sulphuric products comprising sulphuric acid, oleum, and battery acid; specialty and agricultural chemicals including methyl chloride, calcium nitrate, and aluminium sulphate; basic and specialty oleochemicals including fatty acids, fatty alcohols, fatty esters, refined glycerine, soap noodles, alkanolamides, and non-ionic surfactants; alongside rubber examination gloves and parquet flooring. The Property Development segment undertakes the master planning, construction, sale, and asset management of residential, commercial, and industrial townships. The Investment Holding and Others segment provides bulk liquid storage and terminal facilities; general haulage, transport, and freight distribution; warehouse leasing; and money lending services. Geographically, Batu Kawan Berhad maintains extensive oil palm plantations, mills, and chemical manufacturing complexes across Malaysia and Indonesia, while operating downstream oleochemical production assets and technical centres throughout Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Switzerland, as well as in the People's Republic of China. In recent strategic developments, Batu Kawan Berhad executed a major corporate transaction to acquire an up to 47.7 percent controlling equity stake in MKH Berhad, expanding its urban real estate footprint and securing indirect operational control over MKH Oil Palm (East Kalimantan) Berhad. In September 2026, the group entered into a definitive agreement to divest its entire equity interest in Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad to TMK Chemical Bhd in exchange for cash and a strategic shareholding in the enlarged chemical manufacturing enterprise. Furthermore, through its property subsidiary KLK Land Sdn Bhd, the group formed a strategic joint venture partnership with AME Industrial Park Sdn Bhd to undertake the development of a 151.2-acre specialized industrial park in Selangor, Malaysia.
