Nuveen Georgia Quality Municipal Income Fund (NYSE: NKG) is a closed-end fixed income mutual fund that provides current income exempt from both regular federal and Georgia state income taxes. The fund primarily invests in a portfolio of undervalued, investment-grade municipal securities issued in Georgia and other related investments, with a focus on securities having an average maturity of around 17 years; it employs a fundamental analysis and bottom-up stock-picking approach, benchmarking performance against the S&P Georgia Municipal Bond Index and the S&P National Municipal Bond Index. Launched by Nuveen Investments, Inc. and co-managed by Nuveen Fund Advisors, LLC and Nuveen Asset Management, LLC, the fund targets income-focused investors seeking tax-exempt yields from Georgia municipal bonds.
The fund was formerly known as Nuveen Georgia Dividend Advantage Municipal Fund 2 and operated with a geographic focus on Georgia's fixed income markets. In a major strategic reorganization approved by shareholders, NKG merged into Nuveen Municipal Credit Income Fund (NYSE: NZF) on April 17, 2023, in a tax-free transaction where a wholly-owned subsidiary of NZF acquired all assets and liabilities of NKG; common shares of NKG were converted to newly-issued NZF shares at an exchange ratio of 0.85425383 based on closing net asset values from April 14, 2023. This merger, alongside the simultaneous combination of Nuveen Ohio Quality Municipal Income Fund (NYSE: NUO) into NZF, aimed to create a larger fund with lower operating expenses, enhanced earnings potential, increased trading volume, and greater diversification for shareholders.
Prior to the merger, NKG declared pre-merger distributions to fully distribute its accumulated undistributed net investment income, ensuring tax efficiency for investors. The transaction reflects Nuveen's broader strategy of consolidating smaller closed-end funds to improve liquidity, reduce overhead costs, and boost long-term value, as evidenced by similar recent reorganizations. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, through its Nuveen parent operations, the fund's legacy portfolio emphasized preservation of capital alongside high levels of tax-exempt income from Georgia-specific municipal obligations.
