Business
Norbit ASA provides tailored technology solutions to selected niche markets across maritime, connectivity, and product innovation sectors. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, the company operates through three main business segments: Oceans, which delivers advanced sonar systems including forward-looking sonars, bathymetric sonars, sub-bottom profilers, integrated LIDAR and GPS solutions for surface and subsea imaging, mapping, marine surveying, and monitoring to global maritime customers; Connectivity, which offers wireless solutions for asset identification, monitoring, and tracking such as CEN dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) devices, satellite-based truck tolling systems, smart tachographs, battery-operated DSRC on-board units, GNSS and GSM antennas, intelligent traffic systems, vehicle monitoring, fleet management, fuel control, and connected solutions for digitization via data collection, sensor analysis, cloud computing, and data fusion; and Product Innovation & Realization (PIR), which provides research and development services, proprietary product development in fields like radar, ultrasound, sonar, navigation systems, radio, and antennas, alongside contract manufacturing and total client product management. Norbit maintains manufacturing facilities in Norway, the USA, and Hungary, with R&D operations in these locations and a worldwide sales and distribution platform exporting products to over 60 countries, serving diverse customers in maritime, traffic management, automotive, industrial innovation, and electronic equipment sectors with approximately 500 employees. Recent strategic developments include the June 2024 acquisition of INNOMAR Technologie GmbH, a Germany-based market leader in parametric sub-bottom profilers for seafloor and subsurface imaging used in offshore wind farm installations, dredging, geological surveys, and object detection, broadening the Oceans segment portfolio, diversifying revenue streams, and enhancing underwater acoustics capabilities through synergies in market reach and R&D; earlier, in February 2023, Norbit acquired IoT start-up CPS AS to strengthen its Connectivity segment with tailored IoT platforms for recycling and digitalization applications.
