- Carbacid Investments PLC is a Kenya-based investment holding company primarily engaged in the mining, processing, and distribution of natural carbon dioxide (CO2) and related gas products, alongside managing a diversified portfolio of financial and property assets. Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the company traces its operating history back to 1933 and operates its primary natural CO2 extraction and purification facility in the Kereita Forest in Kiambu County. Carbacid operates through two main business segments: Trading and Investments. Through its core operating subsidiary, Carbacid (CO2) Limited, the company supplies products and services including food-grade liquid carbon dioxide for the carbonation of soft drinks, beer, sparkling water, and food preservation; compressed industrial carbon dioxide gas for metal fabrication, metal inert gas (MIG) welding, and fire extinguishing systems; high-purity medical carbon dioxide for hospital applications, surgical procedures, and laboratory research; dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) for temperature-controlled cold chain logistics, pharmaceutical transport, and industrial cleaning; and technical support services comprising high-pressure cylinder testing, hydrostatic validation, valve refurbishment, and bulk transport logistics. Through its investment subsidiaries, Goodison Twenty Nine Limited and Goodison Forty Seven Limited, the company manages fixed-income securities, equities, and commercial real estate holdings. Carbacid serves commercial, industrial, healthcare, and beverage manufacturing clients across East, Central, and Southern Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. In recent operational developments, the company commissioned a new high-capacity CO2 processing and recovery facility in June 2024, expanding manufacturing capacity and facilitating deeper market penetration into Southern Africa. To improve energy efficiency and lower operational costs, Carbacid has also expanded its on-site solar photovoltaic infrastructure with phased installations totaling 1 MWp. In corporate developments, the proposed joint takeover offer by Carbacid and Aksaya Investments LLP to acquire BOC Kenya PLC officially lapsed in August 2024 following the dismissal of a multi-year minority shareholder tribunal appeal and the subsequent expiration of the offer's long-stop deadline without the fulfillment of closing conditions.
