- Umeme Limited is an electric power distribution and retail supply utility company based in Uganda. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Kampala, Uganda, the company operates as the primary distributor of electricity across the country under a 20-year concession agreement with the government-owned Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), supplying power to domestic, commercial, medium industrial, large industrial, and street lighting customer segments. The company's core products, infrastructure operations, and services encompass the distribution and supply of medium- and low-voltage electrical energy; operation, refurbishment, and expansion of electricity distribution networks, substations, switching stations, transformers, overhead conductors, and underground power cables; customer connection and grid extension services; deployment and management of prepayment metering solutions marketed under the Yaka brand; advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and automated meter reading (AMR) smart metering installations for commercial and industrial consumers; post-paid meter reading, billing, and revenue collection; network maintenance, system loss reduction, and power quality monitoring; fault detection, outage management, and 24/7 emergency restoration services; and digital customer service channels, including web portals, mobile applications, and mobile money payment integrations. The company maintains an extensive distribution network spanning urban, peri-urban, and rural areas throughout Uganda and holds dual listings on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) and the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). In recent corporate developments, Umeme is navigating the conclusion and transition of its 20-year concession scheduled to expire at the end of March 2025, in line with the Government of Uganda's strategic policy to consolidate the power distribution sector under the state-run Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited. In preparation for the concession handback, the company is engaged in extensive audit and asset valuation exercises with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), and the Office of the Auditor General to settle the final buyout amount due for its unamortized capital investments into the national distribution grid. Concurrently, Umeme has oriented its operational and capital allocation strategy toward network maintenance, asset optimization, workforce transition planning, and structured shareholder distributions prior to the concession conclusion and eventual corporate restructuring.
