Business
Dangote Sugar Refinery PLC is a Nigeria-based agribusiness and consumer goods company engaged in the refining, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of granulated sugar and related by-products. Headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, the company was established in 1999, commenced commercial refining operations in 2000, and operates as a flagship subsidiary of the industrial conglomerate Dangote Industries Limited. The company is the largest sugar refiner in Sub-Saharan Africa, maintaining a port-based refinery at the Apapa Port Complex in Lagos alongside integrated agricultural estates and milling facilities in northern Nigeria. The company's primary business operations encompass the processing of imported and locally grown raw sugarcane into high-grade refined sugar for household and industrial applications, as well as the commercialization of milling co-products. Its product and service portfolio comprises: Vitamin A-fortified granulated white sugar distributed under the Dangote Sugar brand for retail and domestic consumption, packaged in 100g, 250g, 500g, and 1kg retail sachets as well as 25kg and 50kg bags; non-fortified industrial-grade refined sugar supplied in 50kg bags and 1,000kg bulk containers to manufacturers in the carbonated beverage, food processing, confectionery, bakery, and pharmaceutical sectors; molasses utilized by third-party industrial customers for ethanol distillation, industrial alcohol, and livestock feed formulations; bagasse biomass utilized on-site for thermal energy and electricity cogeneration to power milling infrastructure with surplus potential for grid feed-in; filter cake and press mud distributed as agricultural organic bio-fertilizer; and agricultural support services, including input distribution, mechanized harvesting support, and technical training provided to local sugarcane outgrower farming communities. In recent corporate developments, Dangote Sugar Refinery pursued an internal restructuring and proposed tripartite scheme of merger in 2023 with sister entities NASCON Allied Industries Plc and Dangote Rice Limited to consolidate the group's food, seasoning, and agribusiness operations into a single diversified entity. In April 2024, the participating companies formally notified the Nigerian Exchange that the proposed merger was suspended following regulatory review by the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the operational status of Dangote Rice Limited, resulting in Dangote Sugar Refinery maintaining its standalone corporate structure and independent listing. Concurrently, the company has accelerated investments in its Sugar Backward Integration Program under Phase II of the National Sugar Development Master Plan. This ongoing capital expenditure program includes the multi-phase agricultural and factory expansion of the Dangote Sugar Numan estate in Adamawa State, large-scale commercial land development and dam infrastructure at the Tunga greenfield project in Nasarawa State, and the implementation of advanced center-pivot irrigation systems to achieve its strategic target of producing 1.5 million metric tonnes of refined sugar annually from domestic sugarcane plantations.
