Global X MSCI Portugal ETF (PGAL) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide investment results corresponding generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the MSCI All Portugal Plus 25/50 Index. The fund invests at least 80% of its total assets in the securities of the underlying index and American Depositary Receipts and Global Depositary Receipts based on the securities in the index; it targets exposure to large- and mid-cap companies operating across diversified sectors in Portugal, including utilities (such as EDP and REN - Rede Electrica Nacional), consumer staples (such as Jeronimo Martins), materials, energy (such as Galp Energia), industrials, consumer discretionary, financials, communication services, and real estate. The ETF provides efficient access to a broad basket of Portuguese equities for investors seeking single-country international exposure.
Launched on November 12, 2013, as the Global X FTSE Portugal 20 ETF and renamed effective December 6, 2016, PGAL was managed by Global X Management Company LLC and headquartered in New York, New York. The fund distributed dividends semi-annually, with a total expense ratio of 0.61% and assets under management of approximately $8.45 million as of December 31, 2023.
In a major strategic shift, Global X ETFs announced on January 19, 2024, the liquidation of PGAL as part of a review of its product lineup, with trading ceasing on February 16, 2024, and final cash distributions to remaining shareholders based on net asset value around February 23, 2024. This decision affected 19 underperforming or low-asset funds representing less than 1% of Global X's total assets; Global X Management Company LLC covered liquidation costs excluding brokerage fees. Despite active price quotes persisting on certain platforms into late 2025, the fund no longer operates as an active investment vehicle following its closure.
