PIMCO Total Return II Fund (PMBIX) is an open-end investment company that seeks maximum total return, consistent with preservation of capital and prudent investment management. The fund invests under normal circumstances at least 65% of its total assets in a diversified portfolio of fixed income instruments of varying maturities, including bonds, debt securities and other similar instruments issued by U.S. public- or private-sector entities; these may be represented by forwards or derivatives such as options, futures contracts or swap agreements. It focuses primarily on investment-grade U.S. dollar-denominated securities rated at least Baa by Moody's or equivalent by S&P or Fitch (or unrated securities of comparable quality determined by PIMCO), with up to 20% in high yield securities and up to 10% in preferred securities; the fund may also invest without limitation in mortgage- or asset-backed securities, engage in short sales, use when-issued or forward commitment transactions, or employ leveraging techniques such as dollar rolls. Its portfolio emphasizes sectors like government (54%), agency mortgage-backed (42%), government related (23%), corporate bonds (20%) and cash equivalents (22%), with major holdings including U.S. Treasury futures, notes and Federal National Mortgage Association securities; the average portfolio duration normally varies within two years (plus or minus) of the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Index. Launched on December 30, 1991, and domiciled in the United States with shares available for sale in the U.S., the fund is managed by Pacific Investment Management Company LLC (PIMCO), a subsidiary of Allianz SE headquartered in Newport Beach, California, which oversees global operations across the Americas, Europe and Asia. As of mid-2025, net assets stand at approximately $600 million for the institutional class (PMBIX), with a minimum initial investment of $1 million, a net expense ratio of 1.62% (including interest expense) and daily pricing. Recent updates include a prospectus supplement dated August 1, 2025, reflecting ongoing portfolio management by Mark Kiesel (since 2014), Mohit Mittal (since 2019) and Michael Cudzil (since 2022), with portfolio turnover at 437% in the most recent fiscal year and year-to-date returns of 4.32% as of June 30, 2025. No major acquisitions, partnerships, funding rounds, name changes or strategic shifts specific to the fund have been reported in the last 1-2 years.
