- Semirara Mining and Power Corporation is a Philippines-based integrated energy enterprise engaged in the exploration, extraction, processing, and domestic and international commercial distribution of thermal coal, as well as the generation and wholesale supply of base-load electric power. Incorporated in 1980 and headquartered in Makati City, Philippines, the company operates as a subsidiary of DMCI Holdings, Inc. and is the largest domestic coal producer and a significant power generator in the Republic of the Philippines.
The company operates through two core business segments: Coal Mining and Power Generation. The Coal Mining segment extracts and refines low-ash, low-sulfur sub-bituminous thermal coal from surface mine concessions on Semirara Island in Caluya, Antique. Its offerings in this segment include commercial-grade sub-bituminous thermal coal categorized by calorific values ranging from 4,800 to 5,600 kcal/kg; customized coal blending, screening, and sizing services; specialized on-site fuel analysis and quality testing; bulk marine freight loading, port terminal management, and transshipment handling services; and industrial byproducts, including fly ash and bottom ash for construction materials manufacturing. The company supplies coal domestically to thermal power generating plants, cement manufacturers, chemical facilities, and industrial manufacturing plants, while exporting coal across the Asia-Pacific region to markets including China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia.
The Power Generation segment operates through wholly owned subsidiaries, primarily SEM-Calaca Power Corporation and Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corporation, which own and operate thermal power facilities in Calaca, Batangas. Its offerings in this segment include base-load and mid-merit electric power generation with an aggregate installed capacity of 900 megawatts; wholesale electricity supply delivered under long-term bilateral Power Supply Agreements with private distribution utilities, electric cooperatives, and industrial off-takers; Retail Electricity Supply services provided directly to contestable commercial and industrial customers; wholesale merchant energy sales via the Philippine Wholesale Electricity Spot Market; and ancillary grid stability, voltage regulation, and frequency control services contracted with the national transmission network.
In recent developments, Semirara Mining and Power Corporation has advanced strategic modernization, capacity optimization, and sustainability initiatives across its business portfolio. The company has executed comprehensive life-extension, turbine overhaul, and boiler rehabilitation programs across its generating units at the Calaca power complex to improve plant reliability, heat-rate efficiency, and dependable capacity. The company has also initiated renewable energy expansion projects, encompassing captive and utility-scale solar photovoltaic installations on Semirara Island to hybridize the local microgrid and offset operational emissions from its extraction activities. In its mining operations, the company continues resource extraction and pit optimization at the Molave and Narra mine pits, supported by ongoing progressive environmental restoration of depleted extraction sites, while modernizing its heavy mining fleet, expanding dewatering and water treatment infrastructure, and upgrading conveyor and stockyard management systems to support domestic power demand and international export commitments.
