Business
Proterra Inc designs and manufactures commercial electric vehicle technology with a focus on zero-emission electric transit buses and battery systems for heavy-duty vehicles. Its core product portfolio includes electric buses under the Proterra Transit brand; battery systems and electrification solutions for a wide range of commercial vehicle OEMs across Class 3 to Class 8 segments via Proterra Powered; and charging systems for electric commercial fleets through Proterra Energy. The company operates primarily in North America and serves public transit agencies, airports, universities, and fleet operators. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Burlingame, California, Proterra underwent major restructuring following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in August 2023. Its assets were divided: the Proterra Powered battery and powertrain business now operates independently within the Volvo Group; the transit bus manufacturing unit was sold to Phoenix Motorcars; and the Proterra Energy fleet charging business was acquired by Cowen Equity. Recently, Proterra has launched the H2-23 battery pack as part of its Onyx Series, engineered for Class 8 trucks and demanding commercial applications, delivering industry-leading energy density and flexible installation options. In addition to product innovations, Proterra's strategic moves include its role within Volvo for battery production and expanding its commercial electric vehicle solutions globally. Concurrently, Proterra Investment Partners, a separate entity, acquired AcreTrader, a farmland investment platform, reinforcing its diversification into private equity focused on sustainable agriculture investments. Proterra continues to support electric vehicle electrification and energy storage markets, emphasizing sustainability and technological advancement. The company’s operations and product offerings span the U.S., Canada, the European Union, and select global markets. This comprehensive focus on zero-emission vehicle technologies, battery solutions, and strategic asset realignments positions Proterra as a key player in the electrification of heavy-duty transportation and commercial fleet sectors. Its ongoing innovation in battery technology and partnerships reflect its commitment to advancing sustainable mobility infrastructure and clean energy solutions.
