- Rex Energy Corporation (REXX) is a defunct independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company that previously focused on acquiring, developing, and producing natural gas, natural gas liquids, and condensate in the Appalachian Basin of the United States, including the Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale, and Burkett Shale formations; it also held interests in the Illinois Basin and southwestern U.S. regions. The company owned interests in approximately 554 wells with proved reserves of around 1,033 billion cubic feet equivalent as of late 2017, targeting developmental drilling, higher-potential exploration prospects, enhanced oil recovery projects, and complementary property acquisitions primarily through hydraulic fracturing techniques. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in State College, Pennsylvania, Rex Energy operated over 270 employees at its peak, with offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Midland, Texas; and other locations, serving markets in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and contiguous areas.
In recent major changes, Rex Energy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 18, 2018, amid low commodity prices and substantial debt exceeding $900 million, including $617 million in senior secured second lien notes. The company completed a $600.5 million sale of substantially all its assets—including drilling rights, wells (primarily in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and surrounding areas), and $29.5 million in cash collateral for firm transportation contracts—to PennEnergy Resources LLC on September 28, 2018, with court approval facilitating integration into PennEnergy's contiguous Marcellus operations. Rex Energy I, LLC, a key operating subsidiary, entered liquidation via Chapter 11 on November 14, 2018, fully satisfying certain senior creditors while distributing limited recoveries to others; the entity's stock now trades nominally over-the-counter as REXXQ with negligible market value.
