Business
Renergen Limited explores, develops and produces liquefied natural gas and liquefied helium from its Virginia Gas Project in South Africa's Free State province; it offers compressed natural gas, Cryo-Vacc technology for low-temperature vaccine transport without electrical power, and related energy solutions as a less carbon-intensive alternative to diesel for transport, thermal and power applications. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Sandton, South Africa, the company holds a 94.5% equity interest in Tetra4 Proprietary Limited, which owns South Africa's first onshore petroleum production right valid until 2042, covering 1,870 square kilometers of gas fields with helium concentrations exceeding 3%. Renergen operates primarily in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, targeting industrial, medical, semiconductor, energy and space exploration markets with its high-purity helium and natural gas products. In 2025, Renergen entered into an agreement for its potential acquisition by ASP Isotopes Inc. via a scheme of arrangement, with shareholders approving the deal in July and closure expected by September 30 ahead of ASP's planned spin-out of Quantum Leap Energy; the transaction, supported by over 35% of shareholders, aims to create a global critical materials leader with synergies in isotopes, helium and fluorinated products, projecting over $300 million in EBITDA by 2030. The Virginia Gas Project has secured $40 million in U.S. International Development Finance Corporation funding, plus anticipated $750 million in debt from U.S. DFC and Standard Bank for expansion, while Phase 1 production of liquid helium commenced in January 2023 and continues ramping up. In May 2025, South Africa's Minister confirmed Renergen's helium rights and rejected a competitor's appeal.
