Business
Sanderson Farms, Inc. (SAFM) produces, processes, markets, and distributes fresh, frozen, and prepared chicken products as a fully integrated poultry company. The company offers ice-packed, chill-packed, bulk-packed, and frozen chicken primarily under the Sanderson Farms brand name; prepared chicken items including institutional and consumer-packaged partially cooked or marinated products for distributors and food service establishments; and additional brands such as those continued post-merger for retail, foodservice, and export markets. It operates processing plants and facilities across Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, and other southeastern and southwestern U.S. states, serving retailers, distributors, casual dining operators, and export resellers primarily in the domestic market with some international sales. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Laurel, Mississippi, Sanderson Farms went public in 1987 and historically ranked as the third-largest U.S. poultry producer, processing millions of chickens weekly with over 17,000 employees as of recent years. In 2022, the company merged with Wayne Farms in a $4.53 billion acquisition by a joint venture between Cargill Incorporated and Continental Grain Company (ContiGroup), forming Wayne-Sanderson Farms as a privately held entity no longer listed on NASDAQ. This strategic combination expanded operations into a best-in-class U.S. poultry business with enhanced assets across multiple states including Alabama and Arkansas, improved customer service in retail and foodservice, and ongoing investments in sustainability, animal welfare, and capacity such as the 2025 exploration of the Harrison Poultry acquisition for growth. As a subsidiary within this structure, Sanderson Farms maintains its focus on high-quality, affordable chicken production for domestic and select export markets.
