Business
Radius Recycling Inc., formerly Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc., operates as a leading North American recycler of ferrous and nonferrous metals, processor of end-of-life vehicles and scrap materials, and manufacturer of finished steel products using electric arc furnace technology. The company collects, processes, and sells ferrous scrap including prepared and unprepared grades; nonferrous products such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel, nickel, brass, titanium, lead, zinc, and high-temperature alloys; mixed metals from shredding; and catalytic converters for precious metal recovery; alongside services encompassing scrap brokerage, certified destruction, automotive parts recycling through its Pick-n-Pull retail self-service stores, railcar dismantling, reverse logistics, and third-party recycling (3PR) for retailers and manufacturers. Its steel manufacturing segment at Cascade Steel Rolling Mills produces semi-finished billets and finished long products including rebar, coiled rebar, wire rod, merchant bar, and specialty alloys for construction, nuclear power, and industrial applications. Founded in 1906 and headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Radius maintains over 100 facilities across 25 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and Western Canada, with seven deep-water export terminals on the East and West Coasts, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico serving domestic steel producers and global markets in Asia and Europe. In July 2025, Toyota Tsusho America Inc., a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corp., completed its $1.34 billion acquisition of Radius, delisting its shares from Nasdaq and establishing it as a wholly-owned subsidiary to accelerate investments in recycling infrastructure, nonferrous recovery technologies, green steel production, precious metals collection from catalytic converters, and battery recycling within a circular economy framework; this follows the company's 2023 rebranding from Schnitzer Steel and ongoing upgrades to shredder residue processing systems nearing full operation in fiscal 2025.
