Business
The SPAR Group Ltd (SGPPF) operates as a leading wholesale distributor of goods and services to independently owned grocery and retail stores primarily under the SPAR, SUPERSPAR, KWIKSPAR, SaveMor, TOPS at SPAR, Build It, SPAR Express, and Pharmacy at SPAR brands across South Africa, Switzerland, and other international markets; core offerings encompass fresh produce, in-store bakery and butchery products, deli and ready-to-eat meals, home-meal replacements, groceries, general merchandise, baked foods, liquor, building and hardware supplies, coffee, dispensary and health-related items, confectionery, health and beauty products, frozen foods, catering supplies, wines, and non-food items, with additional support through world-class procurement, warehousing, retailer marketing, and distribution services targeting independent retailers in urban, rural, neighborhood, and convenience formats. Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Pinetown, South Africa, the company manages voluntary trading groups and provides comprehensive value chain services including private label products via SPAR Encore and brands such as Bean Tree, Chikka Chicken, SPAR Freshline & Bakery, Good Living, McCoy Pies, and SPAR Signature Selection, serving diverse customer segments from everyday convenience shoppers to builders and licensed outlets with over 4,500 stores in its network. In recent developments, the group sold its shareholding in SPAR Switzerland to Tannenwald Holding for CHF46.5 million (approximately R1.03 billion) in September 2025, concluding its European portfolio review except for ongoing UK processes, thereby reducing group debt by about R2.7 billion, enhancing financial flexibility, and sharpening focus on core Southern African operations alongside growth strategies like partnerships with Uber Eats and Vida e Caffè plus expanded private label penetration; earlier, it acquired stakes in European entities including BWG Group in Ireland, SPAR Switzerland, and SPAR Poland (subsequently divested), while launching formats like Build It and TOPS at SPAR to bolster its hardware and liquor segments.
