SPDR EURO STOXX Small Cap ETF (SMEZ) seeks to provide investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the EURO STOXX Small Index. The fund invests substantially all, but at least 80%, of its total assets in the securities comprising the index or depositary receipts representing those securities, focusing on small-cap growth and value stocks from eurozone companies selected and weighted by market capitalization. It offers investors targeted exposure to approximately 91 holdings, with significant allocations to mid-cap equities across sectors in countries including Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Austria, and Finland.
Sponsored by STOXX Ltd. and managed by State Street Global Advisors under State Street Bank and Trust Company, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the ETF launched in 2014. It primarily serves institutional and retail investors seeking eurozone small-cap equity diversification, with geographic operations centered on Eurozone markets.
In a major strategic change, State Street Global Advisors announced the liquidation of SMEZ in January 2021, with the final day for creations and redemptions on March 17, 2021, and trading suspended thereafter, reflecting a portfolio rationalization amid low assets under management. No subsequent relaunches, acquisitions, or new product offerings related to SMEZ have been reported.
