SPDR Portfolio Emerging Markets ETF (SPEM) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the total return performance of the S&P Emerging BMI Index, a float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index designed to measure the investable universe of publicly traded companies domiciled in emerging markets across large-, mid- and small-cap segments. The fund employs a sampling strategy to replicate the index by holding a representative collection of securities, including common stocks and depositary receipts of companies from key emerging markets such as China, Taiwan, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa; top holdings include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Tencent Holdings Ltd., and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., with major sector allocations to information technology, financials, and consumer discretionary. Launched on March 20, 2007, and managed by State Street Investment Management (formerly State Street Global Advisors), headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, SPEM offers investors broad, diversified exposure to emerging market equities with a low gross expense ratio of 0.07%, assets under management exceeding $14 billion, and a portfolio comprising over 3,000 holdings as of September 2025. In August 2023, State Street reduced the fund's total expense ratio from 11 basis points to 7 basis points as part of enhancements to its low-cost SPDR Portfolio ETF suite, positioning SPEM among the lowest-cost offerings in its peer group; the manager also underwent a rebranding from State Street Global Advisors to State Street Investment Management in 2025. The ETF trades on the NYSE Arca exchange under the ticker SPEM and targets institutional and retail investors seeking cost-effective access to emerging markets, excluding South Korea which the provider classifies as a developed market.
