Its core product segments encompass films and functional polymers, such as industrial and packaging films including the XENOMAX brand; healthcare products including bioproducts, medical materials, pharmaceutical contracting, antithrombogenic polymers, nerve regeneration conduits, and bone regeneration materials; textile products like airbags, functional textiles designed for mobility tech, indutech, sportech, buildtech, hometech, clothtech, and meditech industries; and real estate leasing and management. Toyobo serves global markets, particularly Japan and Southeast Asia, and operates subsidiaries such as Toyobo MC Corporation and Toyobo STC.
Founded in 1882 and headquartered in Osaka, Japan, Toyobo has recently undertaken significant strategic moves. In 2024 and 2025, Toyobo launched new integrated production plants for artificial kidney hollow fibers and expanded membranes for acute blood purification and biomaterials. It also enhanced production capacity with new equipment for mold releasing films used in MLCC manufacturing and polarizer protective films for LCDs. In June 2025, Toyobo entered a joint research and development agreement related to biomanufacturing with DMC Biotechnologies Inc. Meanwhile, Toyobo MC Corporation developed and exhibited environmental solutions equipment in 2025, including VOC treatment and recovery equipment, catalytic oxidation apparatus, and combustion apparatus. Furthermore, in late 2025, Toyobo decided to acquire its subsidiary Toyobo STC to consolidate operations. In 2022, Toyobo established a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation whereby Mitsubishi acquired certain Toyobo operations related to functional materials including polymerization development, engineering plastics (VYLON® and HARDLEN®), fine chemicals, water treatment membranes, and high-performance fibers.
These recent expansions and partnerships reinforce Toyobo’s position as a leading innovator in high-performance materials and functional textiles, supported by robust research and development efforts focused on biotechnology, polymer technology, and environmental solutions, addressing diverse industries such as healthcare, electronics, automotive, and industrial sectors across Japan and international markets. The company maintains a strong presence in Japan while expanding sales notably in Southeast Asia, reflecting its global growth strategy and continued innovation in advanced materials.
