Business
Schweitzer-Mauduit International, Inc. (SWM) manufactures and sells specialty engineered papers, films, nets, nonwovens, and botanical solutions for tobacco, filtration, packaging, healthcare, and industrial applications worldwide. The company produces a broad portfolio of core products and services, including conventional cigarette papers, low ignition propensity papers, plug wrap papers (porous and non-porous), tipping base papers, reconstituted tobacco fillers, rolling papers, heat-not-burn components such as aerosol generating materials and membrane backing layers (MemBase™), nicotine pouch wrapping papers (MODS™), separator papers for alkaline batteries, overlay papers for furniture and flooring, lightweight printing and writing papers, oil and grease resistant papers, sterilization pouch papers (Medipel™), translucent and breathable packaging papers, silk papers, and technical uncoated papers; it also offers advanced sustainable filtration solutions, botanical fiber papers from flax and hemp, and paper marking services. SWM operates production facilities in France, Poland, Brazil, and the United States, with joint ventures in China, and ships products to more than 80 countries across four continents. Founded as a spin-off from Kimberly-Clark Corporation in 1995 with roots tracing to a 1545 paper mill in France, the company is headquartered in Alpharetta, Georgia. It serves diverse end markets such as cigarettes and combustible tobacco products, heated-not-burn and reduced-risk tobacco alternatives, battery manufacturing, food packaging, medical and healthcare applications, personal care, graphic arts, construction, and consumer goods. In recent years, Schweitzer-Mauduit International underwent a major strategic merger with Neenah, Inc. in 2022 to form Mativ Holdings, Inc., expanding its capabilities in filtration, advanced materials, sustainable adhesive solutions, and paper packaging while retaining the SWM brand for certain operations; the company also rebranded acquired entities including DelStar Technologies, Argotec, and Conwed Plastics under SWM in 2017 to unify its global portfolio of films, nets, nonwovens, and papers. SWM continues to innovate with science-backed sustainable filters, botanical solutions like hemp wraps and rolling papers (Botani), and tailored high-performance materials to support customer transitions to safer, eco-friendly products amid evolving regulations. As a privately owned entity post-merger, it maintains a focus on advanced technologies, manufacturing excellence, and compliance stewardship across its global network.
