Business
The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) is a Canadian multinational banking and financial services corporation headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, founded in 1955 through the merger of the Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank. TD operates through four main segments: Canadian Personal and Commercial Banking; U.S. Retail, including TD Bank America’s Most Convenient Bank® and TD Auto Finance U.S.; Wealth Management and Insurance, encompassing TD Wealth in both Canada and the U.S., TD Direct Investing, and TD Insurance; and Wholesale Banking via TD Securities. The bank offers a comprehensive range of products including retail banking, commercial banking, wealth management, investment brokerage, insurance, and auto finance across Canada, the United States, and internationally, serving more than 28 million customers with over 2,100 branches and 5,100 ATMs combined in North America. In recent major developments, TD completed its $1.3 billion acquisition of U.S. brokerage Cowen Inc. in March 2023, creating TD Cowen to expand its securities and investment banking capabilities. The company has undertaken a strategic repositioning in 2025 with leadership transitions, including executive appointments and governance reforms aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, risk management, and digital transformation. TD is investing significantly in artificial intelligence, digital tools, and talent to accelerate growth, simplify operations, and improve client experience while managing risks sustainably. These initiatives reflect TD’s focus on strengthening its North American market presence and integrating its product offerings across retail, wealth, and wholesale banking services. TD ranks as one of the largest banks globally by assets, holding approximately US$1.9 trillion as of late 2022, and stands as the second-largest bank in Canada. It targets individual, corporate, and institutional clients with tailored financial solutions, supported by subsidiaries and a strong presence in both Canadian and U.S. markets. The bank emphasizes innovation, customer satisfaction, and market leadership, recently recognized for high mobile banking customer satisfaction in Canada. TD trades on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchanges under the symbol "TD" and continues advancing its strategic agenda with a focus on long-term shareholder value and sustainable growth.
