Business
Tokai Carbon Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells a broad range of carbon-related products worldwide, including graphite electrodes for electric arc furnace steelmaking; carbon black for reinforcing tires, rubber goods, plastics, coatings, inks, and toners; fine carbon products such as isotropic graphite, molded graphite, carbon brushes, and carbon fiber for semiconductors, solar cells, and continuous casting applications; smelting and lining materials including carbon and graphite blocks, cathodes, and sidewalls for aluminum production; friction materials for brakes and clutches in motorcycles, trucks, buses, trains, industrial, and construction machinery; industrial furnaces and related equipment for heat treatment of ceramics, electronic components, metals, and glass produced by subsidiary Tokai Konetsu Kogyo Co., Ltd.; and anode materials for lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones and electric vehicles. The company operates through segments encompassing carbon electrodes, carbon black, fine carbon and ceramics, smelting and lining, industrial furnaces, friction materials, anode materials, and others including property leasing; it serves industries such as steel recycling, automotive, electronics, energy storage, and chemicals with production facilities and sales offices across Asia, North America, Europe, and other regions. Founded in 1918 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Tokai Carbon maintains a global network that supports its position as a leading comprehensive carbon materials provider. Recent developments include the October 2025 completion of its strategic acquisition of Bridgestone Carbon Black (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Thai Tokai Carbon Product Co., Ltd., enhancing its carbon black production in Southeast Asia; the December 2024 acquisition through Tokai Carbon U.S.A., Inc. of all shares in KBR, Inc. and conversion of KBR, Inc. and MWI, Inc. into consolidated subsidiaries to bolster graphite machining capabilities in the United States; the May 2025 sale of its German graphite electrode business; and an announced reorganization effective January 1, 2026, merging three U.S. wholly-owned subsidiaries into one entity under Tokai Carbon US Holdings Inc. to improve operational efficiency and group governance.
