- Uni-Pixel, Inc. (UNXLQ) develops, manufactures, and markets micro-structured polymer film materials and related technologies for the display, flexible electronics, and automotive industries, primarily in the United States; the company offers touch sensor films as sub-components of touch sensor modules under the XTouch brand, hard coat resin and optical films under the Diamond Guard brand, engineered films including printed circuitry and protective coatings, and proprietary UniBoss laser patterning solutions for high-resolution capacitive touch sensors and human-machine interface structures targeting smartphones, tablets, wearables, automotive displays, and industrial applications. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, following a 2015 relocation from The Woodlands, Texas, Uni-Pixel previously maintained engineering centers in Japan, Taiwan, and Colorado Springs for manufacturing operations, with a focus on roll-to-roll production processes for transparent conductive films, EMI/RFI shielding, specialty sensors, and cover glass replacements. In recent years, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 30, 2017, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California amid legal disputes involving advancement of defense costs for former executives facing SEC litigation, leading to the layoff of all employees including CEO Jeff Hawthorne, director resignations, delisting to OTC status, cessation of periodic SEC filings, and plans to sell assets such as manufacturing equipment, R&D tools, and intellectual property including prior acquisitions like Atmel's XSense touch sensor assets and licensing deals from 2015; no operational recovery or emergence from bankruptcy has occurred as of the latest available records, rendering the company effectively out of business.
