Vanguard Core-Plus Bond ETF (VPLS) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks total return and a moderate to high level of current income by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of fixed income securities across various maturities, yields, and credit qualities; these include U.S. Treasuries, securitized debt such as mortgage-backed securities, corporate bonds, emerging markets debt, and super-sovereign bonds, with below-investment-grade holdings limited to no more than 35% of assets and an intermediate dollar-weighted average maturity. The ETF holds U.S. and foreign securities of varying ratings, actively shifting allocations to capture relative value while maintaining at least 80% of assets in bonds under normal circumstances. Launched on November 20, 2023, and issued by The Vanguard Group, Inc., headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, VPLS operates globally with exposure to USD-denominated and international fixed income markets, targeting investors seeking broad credit fixed income with low equity correlation. In its brief history, the ETF has demonstrated strong performance, delivering a 4.5% gain from January through November 2024, outperforming over two-thirds of intermediate core-plus bond peers; this builds on the compelling track record of its counterpart mutual fund share class since October 2021. Portfolio adjustments in 2024 included reducing Treasury exposure from an inception average of 36% to 24.5% by September, lowering corporate credit to 30.7%, while increasing emerging markets debt to 13.1% and super-sovereign bonds to 7.7%, alongside elevating specified pools to 18.3%. Vanguard, the ETF's issuer, launched VPLS alongside the announcement of Vanguard Core Bond ETF (VCRB) on December 7, 2023, as part of an expansion in active fixed income ETFs managed by its Fixed Income Group.
