Business
Verso Corporation (VRS), now operating as Billerud Americas Corporation, produces coated papers including coated groundwood, coated freesheet and specialty papers; market pulp for printing, writing, specialty, packaging papers, facial and toilet tissue, and paper towels; as well as printing papers used in commercial printing, media, marketing applications such as magazines, catalogs and books. The company operates through Paper and Pulp segments with facilities in North America, targeting customers in publishing, advertising and packaging industries. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Miamisburg, Ohio, following a 2017 consolidation from Memphis, Tennessee, Verso serves primarily the United States and Canada markets. Verso underwent significant restructuring, emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2016 after reducing debt by $2.4 billion; idled mills in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Duluth, Minnesota in 2020 and closed the Luke, Maryland facility in 2019 amid declining graphic paper demand exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2021, Swedish pulp and paper company BillerudKorsnäs announced its acquisition of Verso, completing the $825 million deal in March 2022 to form Billerud Americas. Recent settlements include a 2021 agreement for Potomac River pollution remediation from the former Luke Mill and a 2022 $244,451 payment to Michigan for Escanaba Mill violations.
