- Westar Energy, Inc. (NYSE: WR), now operating as Evergy Kansas Central, Inc., provides electric generation, transmission, transmission, and distribution services to approximately 690,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers across Kansas. The company generates electricity from a diverse portfolio including coal, nuclear, natural gas, wind, solar, landfill gas, and biogas sources; key facilities encompass the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station, La Cygne Generating Station, Lawrence Energy Center, Central Plains Wind Farm, and various other thermal, wind, and energy centers serving eastern Kansas communities such as Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Salina, and Hutchinson. With a production capacity of around 15,790 MW at the end of 2024 and over 35,000 miles of electric lines, it focuses on regulated utility operations in the United States, primarily Kansas.
Founded through the 1992 merger of Kansas Power and Light Company (established 1924) and Kansas Gas and Electric Company (established 1909), with historical roots tracing to 1882, the company maintains its headquarters in Topeka, Kansas, at 818 South Kansas Avenue. In June 2018, Westar Energy merged with Great Plains Energy in a $15 billion stock-for-stock transaction approved by Kansas and Missouri regulators, forming Evergy, Inc. as the holding company; Westar became Evergy Kansas Central, Inc., while retaining operational focus on Kansas electric services, and the Westar brand retired in October 2019. In July 2025, the Kansas Corporation Commission approved rate increases for Evergy Kansas Central to fund construction of two new 710-MW natural gas plants (Viola in Sumner County and McNew in Reno County, co-owned with Evergy Missouri West) and the 100% owned Kansas Sky solar facility in Douglas County, addressing growing demand from economic expansion and data centers.
