Business
Extraction Oil & Gas, Inc. (XOG) is a Denver-based independent energy company focused on the acquisition, development, and production of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids primarily in the Rocky Mountain region, with core operations in the Wattenberg Field of Colorado's Denver-Julesburg (DJ) Basin targeting the Codell and Niobrara formations; the company also engages in constructing and supporting midstream assets for gathering, processing, and transporting crude oil and natural gas. Founded in 2012 and headquartered at 370 17th Street, Suite 5300, Denver, Colorado, Extraction holds approximately 140,000 net acres of contiguous acreage in the DJ Basin's productive areas, plus 96,700 net acres outside the core basin, with proved reserves of 145.9 million barrels of oil equivalent and over 1,300 gross producing wells as of late 2020. In recent years, Extraction emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2021 after restructuring $1.3 billion in debt, appointing Tom Tyree as CEO and securing a $1 billion reserve-based lending facility; later that year, it completed an all-stock merger of equals with Bonanza Creek Energy, Inc. in November 2021, forming Civitas Resources, Inc., under which Extraction now operates as a subsidiary, followed by Civitas' acquisition of Crestone Peak Resources to consolidate DJ Basin assets into a $4.5 billion enterprise producing around 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company serves U.S. customers through its liquids-rich horizontal drilling inventory, emphasizing operational efficiency, free cash flow generation, and ESG initiatives including carbon neutrality goals post-merger.
